An investigation was launched earlier this week after images posted on social media showed Hazard High School principal Donald “Happy” Mobelini receiving a lap dance from a teenage boy dressed as a scantily-clad woman.
The incident was part of a so-called “Man Pageant” which had been organized by students for homecoming.
Sondra Combs, superintendent of Hazard Independent Schools, confirmed that disciplinary action had been taken following the investigation without specifying further. Combs said that it was an isolated incident and that there “has never been any issue raised” with previous homecoming activities.
However, new videos obtained by the Courier Journal and posted on social media show similar events in the school gym, identified by the gym’s background and logo on the floor, being performed by students in previous years, including boys wearing female underwear and behaving suggestively towards teachers.
In one video, posted to Twitter by sports journalist Nate Bryan and reported to be from 2020, a male student is seen in a long white dress and wig dancing to Madonna’s “Like a Virgin.” At one point the teenager approaches Mobelini and rubs his hands over his head and chest, the Courier Journal reported.
In another clip, one male student wearing a wig and a bra gives an exaggerated lap dance to two males sitting down in chairs in the middle of the gym, while a fourth throws wads of cash in the air. According to the Courier Journal, the video was first posted in 2017 by a former student, and reposted in 2018.
The new videos contradict what the school previously said about the 2021 homecoming event, which also included teenage boys paddling each other and female students wearing “Hooters” waitress costumes.
In a lengthy statement, Combs apologized for the recent homecoming incident after images of it went viral on social media, claiming it was a one-off.
“Homecoming activities were planned as a celebration for students, staff, and the school community,” Combs said. “All were intended to be fun and good-natured; however, the activities did not play out as intended. We strive to foster creativity in our students, but unfortunately, this time it was carried too far.
“Our district would like to apologize for the activity that has been portrayed in the media and we regret how this has unfolded,” Combs added. “This is not the type of event that typically occurs here at Hazard High School, and we sincerely regret any embarrassment this has caused our school community.”
Frank Newberry, a father with two children within the Hazard district, said he does not blame the students for what occurred as school staff in the gym should have taken responsibility.
“They’re children, children do goofy things. My problem is the adults and their reaction to it,” Newberry told the Louisville Courier Journal. “I expect kids to be kids. But, I expect the adults tasked with supervising them to show better judgment than that.”
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear also said that the school should have had “better judgment than that” while responding to the photos from the most recent homecoming assembly, which were originally posted on the official Hazard High School Athletics Facebook page
“My hope is that they’ll be public about any actions taken so that those that are watching this situation know what happens when you make a mistake like that,” Beshear said, via WBIR. “I also hope that they’re going to have open and transparent dialogues with their students that this isn’t acceptable in our modern world. We want to make sure this isn’t an example that some take and repeat.”
Mobelini and the school have been contacted for comment.
