Whether it’s through the creation of unique and individualized levels in games like LittleBigPlanet, or by creating brand-new games for the sole purpose of popping the question, gamers have found increasingly inventive and touching ways to ask for their partner’s hand in marriage. Sometimes the developers even get involved and are convinced to add special emotes or even embed Easter eggs in order to help the lucky couple. Whichever way players choose to do it, there are several games that lend themselves better to proposals than others.

Games Perfect For A Proposal
It seems like a no-brainer that titles where players have a hand in shaping the in-game environments make for the perfect platforms when asking a certain question. As many players have already realized and made use of, a great game for planning a marriage proposal is one of the many Animal Crossing installments.
Nintendo’s social simulation games feature a high level of customization, and Animal Crossing players are able to change the landscapes of the towns and interiors of their homes, as well as their appearances. With such freedom — especially in the later installments — to create environments and change aesthetics, players have made full use of these systems to craft their own personal proposals.
Games in a similar vein to Animal Crossing offer just as many creative and individualized options for marriage proposals. A popular choice for players looking to ask their partner to marry them is Minecraft. In a game where possibilities are pretty much infinite and where players are essentially in charge of crafting every detail of their own environments, many gamers have used Minecraft to build impressively complex structures and even create a rollercoaster that features a marriage proposal throughout the ride.
With custom-level design in a variety of games from LittleBigPlanet and Stardew Valley to Super Mario Maker, developers have not only given players the chance to flex their creative muscles, but to also make their marriage proposals that bit more unique.
However, it’s not just about picking the most creative games — players can also use titles that mean something to them, that they might have played together as cooperative experiences. Maybe it was the game that a player used to get their partner interested in their hobby, or that convinced them to try a new genre. Perhaps it was how they met. Either way, video game proposals can be creative and individualized as well as sentimental and meaningful.
Getting A Helping Hand
Some players might have chosen to go it alone, crafting their own levels or adding their own designs to customizable content. However, others have opted to ask for help from modding communities or even from the game’s developers to pop the question. This was the case for one gamer who reached out to Insomniac ahead of the launch of Marvel’s Spider-Man. They tweeted the developer to ask if it could help with their proposal, and the studio agreed to add an Easter egg to the marquee of a movie theater in the game featuring the big question, (although it has since been patched out).
Other development teams have also offered support to prospective proposals. Gearbox was convinced to help a fan of the Borderlands series ask their partner to marry them with a custom video of the equally beloved and reviled character Claptrap. Destiny developer Bungie also tried its hand at helping with proposals with a custom emote, which saw Guardians taking a knee. This was originally snuck into the game to help a specific player, and also included a custom item and two artifacts to help with the all-important question.
A Portal 2 player also took the game’s new co-op feature to another level when they asked Valve and a group of level designers to help with their proposal. A special level was created, including unique dialogue recorded by the voice actress for the Portal series’ villainous GLaDOS, to hint at a marriage ceremony complete with a Companion Cube. While video games might not be considered the most traditionally romantic of mediums, it’s clear they have had a part to play in many love stories to date, and possibly many more to come.
