The two teams have come up against each other in the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League in the past two seasons. While Mourinho’s side got the better of the French side in the 2013/14 quarter final clash, a David Luiz inspired PSG got their revenge last year, ousting his former club in the Round of 16 tie.
With the recent history between the teams, fireworks were expected even in a pre-season friendly as this one, especially with the likes of Luiz and Diego Costa on the field. But it was the 33-year-old Swede who hogged the limelight for the wrong reasons.
To add insult to injury, the referee not only failed to pick up the blatant foul by Ibrahimovic and instead awarded the free kick in PSG’s favor. And to make matters worse, Zlatan went on to score the opener at the other end a mere two minutes after the incident.
The moment of madness served as a dampener on a night that should have been remembered for the enigmatic PSG striker’s football skills. In the end, Zlatan’s goal was not enough as Chelsea eventually went on to win in the penalty shootout after Victor Moses equalised for Chelsea in normal time.
